The autobiography of a continental chameleon, architect, banker, and primarily Naval Attache, John Gade, whose life is a full and interesting record covering the European scene since the turn of the century. Born of Norwegian-American parents, he was brought up largely in Norway, with educational interludes in France, Germany and America. During the World War, he started his diplomatic career as part of the Committee for Relief in Belgium; then as Naval Attache to Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, the Hague and Portugal successively. Important world figures appear in the record. The book closes with the invasion and occupation of Belgium where he was stationed at the time. Not unusual, but pleasantly anecdotal.
