Not your usual star-spangled inspiration for the inhibited lover, this sex manual is designed like those programmed learning texts for slow readers. Six experts, four of them M.D.s, collaborated on the book, which reads as if it were written by Robbie the Robot. Object: to ""eliminate 'discomfort' responses and substitute 'comfort' responses"" by gradual self-conditioning and positive reinforcement--those behaviorist principles you associate with white rats and pigeons. The first step is to ""define your goals in countable terms."" Next, schedule a couple of fifteen-minute ""practice sessions"" per week with your partner, progressing through seven stages to intercourse after three to four months. Meanwhile, you will develop your pubococcygeus muscle, learn how to masturbate, play with a vibrator and read medium-core porn. (There are also 30 illustrations which we, unfortunately, haven't seen.) You will also mime the authors' ""Instructions for Acting Out an Orgasm"" since ""the enjoyment of sexual activity is a learned activity."" New help for the hopelessly tight-assed who can't afford those whopping sex-clinic fees but are lustful enough for the Big O to try any goddamn thing.
