MASKED PROWLER: The Story of a Rac by John and Jean George Kirkus Star

MASKED PROWLER: The Story of a Rac

By

Publisher: Dutton

A beautifully written and illustrated story about the scuttling life of Procyon, the raccoon, and the wild creatures in the Michigan forest. Procyon, as soon as he was able to leave the den where he was born, began to learn where to find food, where to sleep -- and most important -- which animals were his enemies. It is combat with his greatest enemy -- the hound dog -- and two poachers which wins him his legendary reputation with men, but Procyon licks his wounds and continues his life of eating, hunting, sleeping and finding mates. The authors avoid sentimentality by a wide margin, and the natural detail is instructive and delightful.
