Out of print for more than 30 years, this was first published in 1878. At the Back of the North Wind by the same author has long held a special place in the affections of generations of readers. Sir Gibbie has been edited (cut down by half when all the digressions from the main story were removed) and the difficult and off-putting Scotch dialect has been rendered into English by Elizabeth Yates, who also supplies a Foreword. Miss Yates has produced a book that reads smoothly and retained enough of the Scottish words to flavor the story with the sound of its setting.
