This bridges the gap for small readers who need more pictures than story, but is still in the picture book class, with its double spreads and pictures on every page, half of them in gay colors. Story of a fierce pirate who, under the right treatment, reforms, and makes life brighter for the deserted Mrs. Dooley and her children. A nonsense tale, with undercurrents that parents will enjoy in picturing the welcome (?) the family will get when they walk in on the recalcitrant husband far away. The Warren Chappell pictures would make superb nursery friezes -- they have that bold effect and tell the story which the text supplements.
