The author starts out with basics (and sticks to them): equipping and commissioning the new boat, actually handling it for the first time, navigating--in daytime, at night, by compass and radio. He gives the rules of the road and the non-legal but equally obligatory aquatic etiquette. There are pointers on planning a cruise; living afloat--with children; cooking--from equipping the galley to pre-planning the menu and bringing frozen foods aboard; guests and games aboard and also on the water--skin diving, kiing, etc.; and finally on boat maintenance. Appendices refer to chart and cruising information sources and list basic boat talk terminology. Good bow to stern coverage, a definitely welcoming old hand for the new members of the crew-club; only the question of costs appears to be omitted.
