KIRKUS REVIEW

In 1964, Milton Meltzer wrote a biography of Samuel Gridley Howe which was, in every respect, a better book (Light in the Dark). It described the first American teacher of the blind without the personalization and dramatization that these authors indulge in. It was also better at placing Howe within his family group and era and showing the strong current of idealism that motivated both the man and his age.
