Allan Gilbert's search for stability and salvation follows the unsteady course of imbalance from the time when, after the desertion of his wife, he attempts to suicide, back through the years to a childhood in the Alleghenies where an accident to his sister had left its lasting imprint. Easing his moody despair with liquor and barbiturates, Allan finally turns to a psychiatrist who annotates his remembered but unresolved tensions. Dane Pilgrim, a chance acquaintance who saves his life and takes him in, offers him another kind of escape- as well as the solidarity of suffering in a world which is out of joint. But it is Nina, with her quiet, gracious assurance and affection who makes possible a future- with her- while Pilgrim finds his last release- in death.... A flagellant intensity replaces the fresher, gentler temper of Wait, Son, October is Near---- records a life of not so quiet desperation in explicit terms which somehow fails to communicate its concern to others.
