In this first episode of a projected series of books featuring freedom-loving adolescent Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania at the time of the Revolutionary War, Tim and his partner Dave live in the woods all winter trapping beaver to pay for a trip to the Western frontier. When two young Senecas rob their stake, they go home, but Dave's quick thinking and Tom's marksmanship soon win them the prizes in a town shooting match, and they set out after the thieving Indians. Forced into an impossible contest of Indian skills, they use their wits (and their guns) to skedaddle with their own horses and two extra. Riding proudly into town they find the ready to march on Boston; Tim decides to put off his own dream of freedom on the frontier to fight with them for the liberty of the thirteen colonies. As the dust settles behind Tim and Dave off to the Revolution, the reader will head for the nearest shelf to find the sequel. Moaleakes and muskets, action and character: up to John Brick's standard.
