CAPTIVES OF THE SENECAS

It was a foggy morning in the fall of 1778. Two members of the Twelfth egiment of the Pennsylvania troops had left the fort against orders to hunt for eer. Without forewarning, the two found themselves surrounded by Senecas. Mr. Brick presents a convincing record of the two men's diverse reactions to nearly a year of captivity. Good friends, yet so different in temperament and character,-- Steve Corwin, a woodsrunner, was ruled by cool logic, while Jack, his stout friend, was obsessed with one desire-- escape. All the Senecas referred to by name actually fought in the border wars; the author's portrayals of the Indians as people who were sometimes insanely brutal and sometimes directed by humane instincts, are far more realistic than those feathered and painted wooden Indians which one often encounters in fiction for teenagers. Mr. Brick has written a novel which avoids all cliches of plot and character.
