Is it sagrige to any that I found this dull reading, an unconvincing attempt to blend fantasy and realism? One looks to Buchan for good entertainment value. This time his purpose is twof first to bring into focus the many-faceted sides of Canada's history, early explorers, early settlements, voyageurs, fur traders, etc. etc.; second, to show how human and exciting history is, how essential a background for the present. Both worthy objects- but how many boys who need the lesson will be interested in following the holidays of small sportsman Donald, as the old Indian takes him to the pool where history turns back the leaves. Not quite clear cut enough for the average normal boy to follow with keenness.
