PEMBERTON: Defender of Vicksburg

Military history rather than biography, this record of the gallant campaign to hold Vicksburg. As a biography, this leaves much to be desired. The author, a grandson of the defender of Vicksburg, has erred as so often happens, in holding so closely to the primary sources, contemporary records, correspondence and military communications, that he has lost sight of the human elements, the anecdotal bits, the personalities, the local color which would give a sense of story and drama. As it stands, the book's value is almost solely confined to those interested in strategy and in the minutiae of the Vicksburg campaign. Valuable new material in appendix.
