The inventors, the entrepreneurs, the darers and the dreamers and the do-ers of the Industrial Revolution are the real heroes of the American way of life. Tracing the course of commerce and industry by way of technological innovations and the rise in our standard of living, he describes the process by which simple discoveries proliferate into complex corporations. An economic and political conservative, he has nonetheless been able to generate high excitement: the so-called ""robber barons"" are dramatically re-cast in roles of better perspective, and much has been done to explain in what sense the know how of material culture is related to America's prestige and influence around the world. This latest book surpasses Chamberlain's previous attempts; it can be enjoyed at several levels. As a supplement to the ordinary texts in history and social studies, it supplies facts and ideas with flair and feeling.
