What Parents and teachers can do to increase children's self-confidence: a manual of communications skills and never-fail examples which has a certain stodgy utility. Noting that many children are unable to make or refuse direct requests, the authors suggest several techniques for children to learn. Adults should encourage problem-solving (""What could you do about that?""), discuss body language, and provide behavioral rehearsals: goal clarity, role-playing, feedback. For example, a child could practice with his father what he's reluctant to say to his teacher. Considered separately: The Assertive Adolescent and Assertion in the Classroom, in which children in groups perform communication activities (Receiving Positive Expressions, Giving Compliments). Modest behavioral modification, dry but serviceable.
