This is a revealing composite study of what makes the academic man in the Catholic college what he is. The book is a result of a sociological survey undertaken to provide at east a part of the foundation necessary for a mature evaluation of the state of American Catholic intellectual life. The ensuing portrait of the Catholic teacher is sometimes surprising but the conclusions are clearly optimistic for the future. Particularly interesting are the composite faculty profiles the author sketches in the appendix. Even so, The Academic Man in the Catholic College should be read by every educator and certainly by the administrators to assess the strength and weaknesses of their faculties and to weigh the conclusions of Professor Donovan.
