He points the finger finally at the Vatican for its rigid and suppressive policies (spotlighting the controversial disciplining of Catholic U. prof. Fr. Charles E. Curran) and foresees a real possibility of major defection by American Catholics. Particularly timely in light of the Pope's recent visit, this is balanced, spirited analysis.
