A RICH YOUNG MAN

Publisher: Bruce

This is the life story of St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231). As St. Anthony is the patron saint not only of Padua but of his native Portugal and as many confraternities have been established in his honor throughout Christendom, the facts of his interesting life should be wider known. In the present volume stress is placed upon his background as a member of the wealthy and powerful nobility of Portugal and upon the self-abnegation involved in his entering the service of the church. He became one of the devoted followers of St. Francis of Assisi and in his ministry in Italy, won a great reputation as a preacher. This biography does not leave out the accounts of the miracles attributed to Anthony; the kneeling of a donkey before the Host to convince an agnostic, the fishes leaping out of the water to hear him preach, etc. But it was because of his power as a preacher and his leadership in the Franciscan Order that his ization has seemed so fully deserved. For Catholic readers only.
