NAZIS AND FASCISTS IN EUROPE, 1918-1945

The main logic animating this collection seems to be a desire to hunt out and publish old New York Times articles (these are from the thirties), though editor Weiss, author of The Fascist Tradition, claims the purpose is to ""learn from the past to recognize the coming danger (of totalitarianism) from its earliest symptoms."" Analysis of Nazism and Fascism has passed far beyond this sketchy and disjointed stage, and though there is a certain historical charm for hindsighted readers in an article like Emil Lengyel's ""Hugenberg -- Giant Shadow over Hitler"" (1933), some value in re-examining contemporary attempts to classify Hitler in conventional historical terms, and a good measure of on-the-spot insight in some of the articles, there is no compelling reason to resurrect these particular pieces from the files.
