An ex-sergeant in the SS, Polish by birth, begins his odyssey with his return from the Russian front to fight against the growing defeat in the west. Scurrying back, he is trapped between the Red, and Allied armies and forced to surrender. With no future left and a past to be concealed, the narrator con his way into the French Foreign Legion, shoulders arms in Africa, moves to Vietnam, and shunts about Asia warring, boxing, rotting in jail, trying to stowaway to American, attempting suicide, drinking, making love, and gradually earning security. His story told here is violent, embittered and without any apparent moral or social point.
