The joint authors of this book have succeeded in presenting the Christian Science way of life as a way of enlightenment and enrichment that is open to men and women in all walks of life. They tell the history of Christian Science from its founding by Mary Baker Eddy to the present. They present their founder with admiration, if not veneration, making the most of her very human failings and misfortunes as evidence of her complete identification with the human race in all its errors and shortcomings. Her text, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is not viewed as critically as some might wish, but as affirmatively as might be expected in this context. The point is especially made, however, that physical healing is neither the primary purpose of Christian Science nor its main effect upon the lives of those who embrace it. Rather it shows the purpose of Jesus to enrich human life by bringing to men a deeper and more immediate sense of Deity, a profoundly transforming revelation of God as Love. A separate section, A Christian Scientist's Life, by Erwin D. Canham, editor of the Christian Science Monitor is of greatest interest to the general reader. It demonstrates how he believes the teachings of Christian Science have influenced his life and career. John DeWitt is assistant manager of the Committee on Publication of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass.
