Neither fish, flesh, fowl nor good red herring, this college story is outside Erskine's province, and fails to comply with the expected rules of the track down which he started. From the angle of a college story, it is pretty shadowy and unconvincing. There is a suggestion of Bronson's AMERICAN HERO in the story of a youth forced by circumstances to earn his way through Columbia University. He acts as glass polisher in a restaurant, as gigolo, and so on; he drifts from a good girl to a bad and back again; he gets nowhere, but emerges with a degree which is proof of a good shaking up, if not a good education. Ran serially in the New York Herald-Tribune, and may secure a fair circulation through the author's reputation, but has no lasting value from the sales angle.
