Blood kin and near-literary-kin to William Faulkner in this novel of a Mississippi poor white family, a saga of the bottom rung of society. John Faulkner is less oblique, less sensational than William. But his story of the Taylors bears resemblance to the Joads and the Lesters of fiction. The Taylors and their ten children, abandon sharecropping for the doubtful advantage of the WPA, at $26.00 a month. An unwholesome crew, ignorant, shiftless, too nearly gone to seed for salvage, taken in by every buy-on-credit company, and eventually laid off by the WPA. Sympathetically done, with a certain inevitable impact and with little relief. Sociological novel.
