A fictionized account of the voyages of one destroyer taken over by the British, and a vivid picture of what the naval heroes of England, or of any nation, actually experience. There are the conversations among the officers in the Wardroom, all of them from different walks of life, some regulars and some reserve. There is the Chief Engineer, a precise man, -- the Doctor who longs for a chance to use his skill, -- the Gunner, an old salt, -- a young Reservist who gained his experience from yachting. There are problems of sea sickness, engine trouble, the cat who had kittens almost in the midst of battle, long dreary hours of watching in suspense, the sense of a job well done. Then, at long last, comes action when the ship the destroyer is convoying is torpedoed, and the destroyer gets its revenge. Absorbing, exciting reading.
