Six Summers in Paris easily overcomes its poor title and becomes as interesting and exciting as its subject, the French Revolution. The product of exhaustive research, it never betrays its scholarly origins: it is informative and authoritative without being pedantic, lively and entertaining without being pap. And it is superbly written in vivid prose that transports the reader back to the eighteenth century, no mean accomplishment for a history book. Despite an occasional tendency to explain the past in terms of the present, this is an outstanding account of the whole sweep of the Revolution for the general reader, young and old.
