KIRKUS REVIEW

The first four volumes are based on the Hebrew Scriptures:- Pentateuch; Former Prophets; Latter Prophets; The Writings. The fifth volume (presumably only in Christian set) will treat the new Testament. Each volume has its own Index of Illustrations and Sources, about 400 illustrations, the majority in full color, and text drawn from the Scriptures, and a commentary clarifying the significance of the text as revealed by recent scholarship and archaeological discoveries. The volume sent us for examination covers the later Prophets, a period of about 400 years from the Assyrian Empire down to the end of Persian domination and prosperity for Judah and Israel, succeeded by destruction and deportation, by years of exile and by the return to Zion and the Second Temple. The prophets from Amos and Ho to Haggal, Zechariah and Malachi, include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Eekiel, major prophets. A superb publishing venture, which- unfortunately- is so expensive that the small library and the individual is unlikely to acquire it. Large libraries and university libraries- note.
