FORSYTES, PENDYCES AND OTHERS

This is one of those books that seem inevitable concomitants of the death of a very successful writer:- a collection of odds and ends, waifs and strays of a crowded literary career. This volume, as is usually the case, is extremely uneven. The stories -- one long one dealing in passing with several members of the Forsyte family, and preceding the action of The Country House will make the volume important to all who want the rounded Frsyte picture, though the story in itself is negligible; several other stories of varying length, a few of them war stories, dating back to that period; there are four dramatic fragments, sections of unfinished plays, and so on; and there are a good many literary notes, many of which have appeared as prefaces or introductions to special editions of such people as Joseph Conrad. The market for this volume is, obviously; those of your customers who want to complete their Galsworthy sets, public libraries, and those to whom the name of Galsworthy spells enchantment.
