ARTHUR by John Graham

Arthur Silverman, a Cambridge conservative and a graduate student in math, uses a surprising amount of logic to resolve a tricky murder case that he accidentally becomes involved in. He was one of the last to see the victim, supposedly alive and well on a rock in the ocean before the body drifts in with the tide. But there are the strange marks on the wrists and the man who plans to use Arthur as his watertight alibi. It's a very slow tease up to the very ingenious ending.
