GOLF -- ITS HISTORY, PEOPLE, AND EVENTS

Publisher: Prentice-Hall

You'd need a caddy to carry it but this 330 page leviathan might be just what a golf widow needs to entice him home. This does give the history and development of golf but the major concentration is on the sport in America ever since the day that a 20-year-old ex-caddy named Francis Ouimet made ""the shot heard round the world"" and took the championship crown away from two previously invincible British pros. This names the greats since then and gives full coverage to each--Bobby Jones, Sam Shead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, ""The Babe"" Didrikson Zaharias etc. It offers a close look at their backgrounds, style, triumphs, failures, technique etc., right down to their personal idiosyncrasies--i.e., W.C. Hagen not only introduced sartorial splendor to the green but he was an expert at using subtle psychology to unsettle his opponents. This covers all the major tournaments including statistical breakdowns and gives an exciting account of the greatest moments and greatest shots. Then there is a description (accompanied by colored illustrations) of each of what Mr. Jones, a famous golf architect considers the ten best courses in the world. Mr. Grimsley, a sports writer, keeps things moving and its above par, a good gift.
