BIRTH OF A POND by John Hamberger

BIRTH OF A POND

Hamberger recently built a pond on his Pennsylvania farm, which gave him the idea and the material, though this is told impersonally and about man-made ponds in general. They might be designed by a ""representative"" of the Conservation Department and bulldozed in early spring; after that small life forms trickle in with the spring water, attracting larger animals; plants root; and by the third year the pond is ready to be stocked with fish. With functional but unexciting blue and gray illustrations, a valid but far from essential addition to the ecosystem shelf.
