AMERICAN NEGRO SHORT STORIES

By

Publisher: Hill & Wang

Thirty-one stories by American Negro authors reflect the life of their people from slavery to the present. The contributors include Paul Laurence Dunbar, W. E. B. Dubois, Arna Bontemps, Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Frank Yerby, Ann Petry, James Baldwin, William Melvin Kelley, LeRoi Jones. In his introduction, John Henrik Clarke sketches the course of American Negro literature to the 1960's, when in Ralph Ellison's words, it is beginning to explore ""the full range of American Negro humanity."" While the case for the artist as Negro has been contraindicated, this comes forward as a statement of the Negro and American heritage.
