(YA) Sir John here prefaces an informal notebook text saying that it is ""rather more technical, I hope more practical too, than Early Stages"". He goes on to discuss the art or craft of acting and directing, and particular roles he has experienced as either actor or director or both. He speaks of Richard the Second, The School for Scandal, The Importance of Being Earnest; Benedick, Leontes, Cassius, Hamlet; Congreve, Sheridan, Goldsmith. He performed in Chekhov under Komisarjevsky and St. Denis, was Lear for Granville-Barker -- and his script notes for the part and Granville-Barker's correspondence are included as appendices. For all its revity, this is quick, sure commentary that will be of interest to young thespians, n particular.
