KIRKUS REVIEW

Straight melodrama in this sea tale about a secret, a fearful voyage, war and escapes on a desert island, and the triumph of true love. Jem Shaw ships aboard the Java whose captain knows the secret of where rare pepper may be found. With Captain Coit is his lovely wife, whom Jem loves. After dangers and adventures in which Coit is finally killed, Jem and Coit's wife escape together. A tight-packed, fast-moving yarn. Very little emphasis on historical background.
