Mr. Sherman, arts editor of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, with enthusiasm and spark sets forth the saga of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. The geneology of ancestors includes organizations with short and long life spans and the men who as civic-minded citizens felt that Minneapolis to be a good place to live needed more than good board and bed. The story takes on lustre for more than a regional audience (which will still be the core for sales) with the coming of famous stars and most of all of the conductors who contributed to the molding of the orchestra -- Oberhoffer the poetic, Verborati the scholarly, Ormandy the dramatic, Mitropoulos the monastic, and at present Dorati, and with the excursions across the country on annual tours. The story of how in orchestra became a necessary element in a community is one which may help wishful citizens of other cities throughout the U. S. to devote themselves to a cause of more music and the organizations to produce it.
