Without Fielding any of the specifics (or attempting to), this is a casual, carpe diem commentary on travel vs. tourism, designed to keep you flitting frenetically from sight to site and away from Michelin * * * and turreted hostelries. Mr. Keats spent a year living in a villa in Italy, and one chapter here (any of them could have appeared in Holiday) deals with really seeing Europeans rather than Europe in their more native habitats. Additional general directives: take more money than you can spend, less luggage than you think you need, keep your options open as to where you're staying. Travel with children of practically any age he finds generally unsatisfactory and there's a closing piece on your return re-acculturation. To be read before, during and after, with pleasure.
