Rick the Tick demonstrates the ins and outs of life with diabetes in Knight’s picture book.

Unlike some of his peers, Rick the Tick has diabetes. The illness doesn’t slow him down, but it does require him to take precautions to keep himself healthy and happy. Before he eats, he has to prick his finger, and he always keeps an eye on his blood sugar: This might mean taking insulin before having dessert or stocking up on juice and snacks in case playing around wears his body down (“Rick’s life just took a couple extra steps / Like counting his carbs while his food was prepped / Other than that, he was just the same.”) Yet he still enjoys playing games and spending time with his loved ones. His family and friends are understanding of his situation, and his parents, in particular, are always there to help him with his injections or with preparing a balanced meal. Knight’s thoughtful debut normalizes the routines of people who have diabetes: namely, children who either have it themselves or know someone who does. Knight keeps the text minimal and instructional with simple, direct sentences that anyone can understand. And his clear and colorful illustrations convey that life with a chronic illness can still be joyful and fulfilling.

A sensitive, engaging, and child-friendly introduction to life with diabetes.
