INTO THE ABYSS

This is an earlier novel by the author of Via Mala -- and recalls that book in the setting of the Swiss mountains, and in the emphasis on emotional values. The story of a marriage between a young woman with a strange background, resulting in definite complexes emotionally, and an old man, whose son loves the same woman. There is very little plot -- and the story seems to spin out the emotional conflicts to undue length. There is an Ibsen quality to his handling of emotional stress which pulls it out of the commonplace. But it is not as fine a book as the later Via Mala.
