The 5-8 Chapters of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans have incomparable significance for Protestant theology and devotion, and the Rev. Dr. John Knox, Baldwin Professor of Sacred Literature at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, has written a moving series of exegetical meditations on these verses. In them St. Paul describes from within what life in Christ is like, and they provide an admirable introduction to St. Paul's thought. Since these chapters have to do with the basic nature of the Christian Church, Protestant clergy especially will have their minds sharpened and their spirits quickened as they permit themselves to be guided by Dr. Knox to see anew that ""becoming a Christian is not coming to a new state of mind; it is being brought into a new state of being, the state of grace, the community of God's love in Christ"".. No mature study of Romans can afford to miss this illuminating contribution to its understanding. Some of Dr. Knox's earlier and well known books include The Man Christ Jesus, On the Meaning of Christ, and Jesus, Lord and Christ. In all of them the reader is privileged to share the author's own deep faith in the lordship of Jesus Christ over all life.
