Why kill an old teaching pro, if you really mean to eliminate the leaders of the U.S. Open?"" Doesn't make sense, perhaps, but someone has indeed murdered golf master-teacher Jim Rossi by tossing him off a balcony in Atlanta's Peachtree Towers Hotel. . . and that same someone is terrorizing the U.S. Open being played nearby: the first leader is found in the golf-course lake; his closest rival is then discovered sauna-ed to death. And more players will die--cyanide in the chapstick, etc.--unless the cops and/or likable AP sportswriter John Morris can figure out the motive or the source of the drugs involved in the killings. Crudely structured--and no zap in the finale--but some engaging, easygoing chat fills the spaces between murders; and the golf atmosphere, though not whipped up enough to intrigue the uninitiated, will certainly convince and delight any mystery readers with a feel for the links.
