KIRKUS REVIEW

Certainly the book on bullfighting (revised and updated since first published in 1952), this is a must for the aficionado and a great guide for the initiate. Mr. Marks here discusses the distinctive peculiaries of this art relating it to the Spanish character and its fascination with death. The bullfight is ""a spectacle of violence and valour, at once primitive and complex, it does not merely symbolize the drama of life and death but enacts it, positively, in the brief passing of an afternoon to dusk, before one's very eyes."" He analyzes the great toreadors in terms of style and performance and gives a complete breakdown of the astonishingly complex technicalities involved. From the pandemonium of Pamploma to the precise ceremonies of the ring, you are there...with understanding. Bravo!
