KIRKUS REVIEW

Private detective Archer is given not only a runaround but a mad tangle of suspects in the disappearance of wealthy Sampson, known for his crackpot actions when drunk. Archer covers a lot of California in his search, from low dives to high mountains, from torch singers to astrologists, discloses a racket in alien smuggling, is unable to prevent murders, and takes a bit of bruising himself to latch on to his prey. For the epicure in its understated toughness -- suave finish.
