KIRKUS REVIEW

Short pieces, some from which present some tangential commentary on the author's fellow humans. There are some autobiographical touches,- his trip to ""lovely"" Ireland, his experiences in Bellevue when he had a heart attack, gambling in a poolroom. There is the origin of the movie Jackpot. Kentucky blue grass country and its horses, a little old lady and the census, the bike that Mrs. Carmody bought for her son, Easterners in Los Angeles, an episode on Fifth Avenue, medical knowledge of Third Avenue bartenders, a widowed taxi driver who wants to marry again -- all adding up to able reporting and companionable yarning.
