Little John"" Rawlings, the NYPD narrator-sleuth of The Great Hotel Robbery (1982), returns in another farfetched episode--starting when Tara Alvarado, photographer for a posh N.Y.C. auction house, informs the cops of a heist-in-the-making. Tara, it seems, has been offered big bucks if she'll give the thieves inside data on the upcoming arrival of twelve rare diamonds, including the legendary North Star. So, with Tara as wired-for-sound informer, Rawlings & Co. identify the conspirators, Rawlings himself infiltrating the gang: a shoot-out ensues; all but one of the thieves is put out of commission. But then the diamonds are stolen, the surviving thief is found dead. . . and Tara has disappeared! Could it be that Tara has been the heist mastermind all along? Yes indeed: Rawlings follows her to England, home of the North Star's aged owner (Tara's grandma!). And long-winded explanations ensue, along with tenuous psycho-motivations and two elaborately stagey suicides. Delivered in Rawlings' rat-a-tat-tat shorthand style, padded out with unnecessary detail and weak/vulgar comedy: a loosely plotted, just-passable diversion for fans of tough-cop chatter and caper folderol.
