MASTERY OF DRAWING

This should prove many times over worth the price, as it is virtually a one-volume handbook of instruction in practical terms for the would-be artist. Assuming an interest and some measure of ability (or shall we say facility?) on the part of the reader, John Moranz, out of his own practical experience, analyzes the breakdown of techniques. He illustrates each point with drawings- 1150 individual drawings in all. He takes the head as his first major topic; follows the block method, then the shift to the cube for all round study, then the features, individually, finally the finished portrait, the importance of lighting, the problem of expression. From there he goes on to hands and feet, figure drawing, the draped figure, the achievement of perspective, the importance of composition, and- in final sections -- the application of what has been learned to advertising layout, illustration, commercial art, with one side excursion on the drawing of animals. In addition to the drawings there are a number of color inserts.
