Another musical biography by the historian of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, John N. Burk. Following a similar approach to his former work on Beethoven, the author devotes considerable space to the composer's life, his struggle with poverty, his youthful ardor and attachments, and his tragically failing health. The second section of the book considers the full accomplishments of Mozart, listing his works, giving their keys, Kirschel listings and other relevant data, and in the case of the operas and dramatic work, their plots. Not a deeply provocative work, not marked by a sensitivity commensurate to the subject, not sparkling with illuminating musical revelation, nonetheless Mozart and His Music provides a competent and informative reference book, a book which Mozart enthusiasts, particularly amateurs, will read with interest.
