Personal Witness is a synthesis of at least superficially disparate biblical themes, the purpose of which is to evolve a concept of the spiritual life as a personal, dynamic relationship between God and man. It is refreshing to find an author who has not only the audacity, but also the erudition and depth to go beyond the cliches of popular biblical writing and develop the content and significance of some of the less known biblical themes for the benefit of the general reader. The usefulness of Navone's book, however, is circumscribed by an unrelenting didacticism in presentation, by an (almost) impenetrable density of style, and by a young scholar's fondness for the jargon of his trade. It is a pity that the author is not as adept in the use of the tools of communication as he is in the use of those of scholarship; even so, the reader's patience will be rewarded.
