KIRKUS REVIEW

John Nestroy was a Viennese playwright of the mid-nineteenth century, whose satire aimed at the heart of the new bourgeois culture and Gemutlichkeit. Thornton Wilder, in his foreword, touches on the ""verbal acrobacy"" of Nestroy. It is sprightly enough, as translated here. Still widely performed today, Nestroy has brut bubble and bite; still a very special taste.
