Ria is a chipmunk matron who gradually learns to trust Flower, the little girl who provides melon rind for Ria and her babies. Shadow, Flower's cat, teases and chases the chipmunk family, but it is a hawk which really jeopardizes Ria's life. The text takes the reader into the little tunnels where Ria makes a home with her mate and ends with winter hibernation.
