This may not enhance Marquand's literary reputation- but it has everything his claque demands and desires: the modern scene with throwbacks to a period within memory, with exact details at both levels. Marquand is at his best when he reflects a way of life he has known himself- and here he shares that of a successful playwright, along with his producer, caste, critics and sycophants. The exaltation and the depression as well as the hopes and fears are taped, along with the story of Tom Harrow's loves, marriages, divorces during the critical moments of his mercurial life. The scenes shift from the New England town of Harrow's boyhood to New York, to Florida, and back again as do the time sequences from past to present. A box office sell-out, this is unquestionably professional and surely popular. serialization proves it.
