Frank Lutz, an early devotee of fruit flies as a laboratory experimental species for genetics, was, by economic circumstance, forced into entomology. His Field Book of Insects, still a standard work, is the testament of just how far his work for the American Museum of Natural History pressed him beyond his bent for narrow specialization. His insect zoo dramatized the living insect as opposed to the pinned and carded dead exhibit.
