Here, for the information-seeking layman, is a consideration of the history of electronic computers, the elementary principles of their operation and design, examples of their current applications and those being planned for their future. With knowledge expanding explosively, the computer and its growing uses has become, in its brief lifetime, a modern phenomenon, and it is the digital not the analog type with which this book is concerned. From M. I. T. and other experimental and testing, institutions, the material here should be of definite importance to every field in which machines such as these are valuable.
